2018 Resident Advisors Georgia Masters and Jasmine Downey have been featured in the latest edition of Student Accommodation; the official journal of APSAA.

The two women have been presenting the College’s sexual consent presentation as part of TRC’s orientation program, and were pleased to have had their work recognized by the organization.

“We truly believe education surrounding consent is one of the most important steps in taking a stand against sexual assault in our community”, said Jasmine and Georgia.

APSAA; the Asia-Pacific Student Accommodation Association, is the peak industry body for providers of tertiary student accommodation, and showcases the work being done in colleges and university housing across the Asia-Pacific region.

Georgia and Jasmine have presented their speech on sexual violence and consent multiple times, and have found that a peer-to-peer approach, though often a difficult conversation to have, is the most effective way to ‘unblur’ the concept of consent.

The establishment of a safe and respectful culture is of the utmost importance at Trinity, which is why Georgia and Jasmine’s presentation is always presented on the first day of the College’s orientation program.

TRC’s consent presentation is not the only talk given to residents during the College’s orientation week. New residents also complete Bystander Training, run by some of TRC’s experienced trainers. Trinity’s Step Up! Bystander Intervention is a training program that teaches students how to recognize and safely intervene in any challenging situation they might be faced with.

Waleed Abdalla, 2018 Resident Advisor and now TRC alumni, completed the program at the beginning of 2018 and said “The Step Up program showed me and everyone else that one should not just wait for someone to do something about a situation, but take action and step up yourself in a way that ensured your safety as well”.

Trinity’s Step Up! Bystander Intervention training was also featured in the December edition of the APSAA Journal.

Great work ladies, we’ve been lucky to have you as part of our Orientation program!
