Congratulations to current resident, and 2019 Resident Advisor, Lucas Cary who was awarded the 2019 New Colombo Plan Scholarship.

Lucas recently returned from Canberra, where he was awarded the scholarship by the Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Frances Adamson.

As part of his trip, Lucas also got the chance to meet the Hon Julie Bishop MP, who started the New Colombo Plan program in her role as Minister for Foreign Affairs for the Australian Government.

The New Colombo Plan is an initiative of the Australian Government that aims to increase knowledge of the Indo-Pacific, by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region. The prestigious scholarship has a rigorous application process, with the top applicants being flown to Canberra for an interview with a panel of experts and leaders in relations with their proposed host country.

Lucas will commence the Colombo program with full-time study at Satya Wacana University in Salatiga doing an Indonesian Language Short Course, before starting his course-based study at Bogor Agricultural University in West Java in the latter half of 2019.

Alongside study, Lucas will be undertaking multiple internships in areas across Indonesia and Fiji, focusing on environmental research and conservation. Finishing his undergraduate degree in Indonesia, it sounds as though Lucas is going to be a very busy guy!

We are fortunate to have Lucas continuing as a Resident Advisor for Semester One in 2019. Congratulations again!
